MEXICO 2011 Pt.2 (Summer)

Jumped on a plane 6/25/11 and flew one-way to the furthest airport in Mexico from Austin, Texas. From there I will wander about photographing and travel-blogging using an iPhone and minimal audio/video gear. The only plan is going into the unknown and letting the unfamiliar move and inspire. I will write about the adventure and chance encounters along the way.

I have discovered that while traveling, you're paying much closer attention to all the little details you normally tend to filter out when at home in familiar surroundings. That heightened state of awareness tends to inspire and seems to fuel creative thought. I've learned you can get to this state of mind anywhere, even at home. It's just so much easier while traveling and the potential to see the world from a completely new perspective is greater.

Buen Viaje!

Just pulled the trigger!

Well, now the deed is done. No more apprehension and playin' it safe. Really can't afford it, but I've purchased a ticket for next Saturday to the furthest airport from Austin in Mexico, ie. Cancun. That's not really my destination, but I'll likely stay in a cheap hotel near the bus station and at least take the ferry over to Isla Mujeres for a day. After that, might go to Merida. Though, I have absolutely no plan at all. Just making it up on the fly.

Have decided to go light this time as well. Only taking an iPhone 4 for shooting & editing and a small Olympus XZ-1 compact camera for better resolution stuff.

I've learned to be fairly content without having to move all the time, but there's just something about traveling that gets me to a different level of awareness. Likely due to the fact that when you're traveling, you're paying much closer attention to all the little details you tend to filter out when you're at home in familiar surroundings. That heightened state of awareness tends to inspire me and seems to fuel creative thought. I've learned you can get to this state of mind anywhere, even at home. It's just so much easier while traveling.

Haven't been in the Yucatan or the Southernmost portion of Mexico since before digital cameras, so I'm really excited to photograph areas I haven't seen in nearly 20 years! I've also learned a good deal more now and at least have a working knowledge of Mayan culture and am traveling lighter these days.

I've been trying to find a way to fund these trips with the content I produce. Some have been marginally successful but nowhere near covering my costs. That being said, I live to travel and communicate the experience to others. It gives me great joy to feel that others are tagging along with me. But, the fact remains that I must pay expenses and though I'm not too proud to beg, it's awfully awkward.

So this time I'm not going to commit to any regular booklets/magazines, etc. Nor, will I be constantly asking for reader's support. I will simply remind folks every now and then that any financial help offered at all is greatly appreciated and can be made throught the PayPal button on the left column. If you're as light in the pocketbook as I am but want to help, please forward, facebook like, Google +1, retweet, forward my postings, etc. and that will also be greatly appreciated.

I've also learned that folks often don't have the time for endless text postings or long audio blogs, etc. So, I'm going to keep it short with a few photos here and there. Audio and or video postings will be kept short as well. If I'm compelled to write something lengthly, I will make it available to buy/download as a digital ebook PDF for those interested and I will likely put together a book in some form towards the end of the trip.

There may be a handful of emailed postcard postings sent out to my mailing list so if that sounds like something you'd enjoy, you can subscribe at the subscribe page to the left.

In short, please share in the excitement of heading out again on a new adventure. If you can help in any way at all, that's awesome! If you can't, well then know you're a most welcome stowaway regardless.

The adventure begins in less than a week from this posting!

Bienvenido!

Cancun to Playa del Carmen

It's so strange how it already feels like this trip has gone on for weeks now... but it's only been 3 days.

So far it's been raining off and on since arrival. Luck has still been on my side with little indications like the first torrential downpour happened just after I found a cheap room near the bus station in downtown Cancun. Stomping around fully loaded while looking for a room would not have been pleasant.

Then, I take the ferry over to Isla Mujeres and get just enough photos before it started to rain again. Just before the rain started, it just so happened that some new friends who know my wife, etc. were in Isla too & hailed me down for an island visit! They're staying in a nice condo and we had an awesome afternoon drinking and telling stories as the rain fell.

Kickstarter Off the Deep End Launched

OFF THE DEEP END

A Visual Swan Dive into the Unknown

I am very happy to announce that my Kickstarter project Off The Deep End has launched! Still in Playa del Carmen and finally got some sunshine. Making a little video on my iPhone was a bigger trick than I had anticipated. And then uploading it somewhere that I could then download at an internet cafe and then reupload via desktop since I couldn´t upload via iPhone... let´s just say it was a lot tougher than I thought it´d be and leave the whining out of it. ;-)

If the weather continues to be nice, thinking I´ll stay here a couple more days then then head out. Haven´t decided where to yet, but I´m leaning toward a place near Chetumal called Bakalar. Might try to squeeze in Merida as well, but that would mean backtracking before starting West.

This is the first time I´ve done a Kickstarter project, but the way it works is that you come up with a project and submit. If accepted, you come up with your total goal and some awards for pledges at various levels. The money is held until the goal has been met and then the funds are released. If the goal isn´t met, all bets are off and no one is charged.

I´m very hopeful that there are enough people out there who love what I do on the road so much that they´re willing to pledge support. In exchange for support, I´ve got some nice awards layed out on the Kickstarter page.

Please consider supporting this creative project and if you dig what I´m doing share links with all your friends!

More coming... Stay tuned!

Consciousness of Akumal

"Consciousness of Akumal" ~ Akumal, Mexico (c) 2011 Skip Hunt

This is near a beautiful little cove about 45mins from Playa del Carmen that's also a protected turtle preserve. Along the shoreline there are broken pieces of bleached bone-white coral and these stones that look like petrified brains.

So surreal & cerebral. ;)

Igor's Birthday at Sac Be

Sac Be Eco-House near Playa del Carmen

Sooooo glad I decided to stay another day here in Playa del Carmen! I have a Mexican friend named Igor whom I met in San Luis Potosi a few years ago. He moved to the Yucatan a couple years ago but only recently to Playa del Carmen.

Well, it just so happened to be his birthday and he invited me to celebrate with he and his friends in this way cool Eco-House community called Sac Be near Playa del Carmen.

He and this cool french dude named Vincent picked me up in an old Gran Marquis and off into the jungle we went.

Over the day and night awesome folks mostly in their 20's I think came and went. There was juggling, some strange fruit brew, beer & various other party-centric substances.

When it got hot, we all went down into this private cenote cave. You had to go almost straight down a slippery primitive ladder holding onto ropes & jump down about 13 feet into a deep fresh-water cenote. There were holes at the roof of the cave letting in just enough light to illuminate the turquoise water. Amazing! We went into it around dusk as well.

The party is still going on today, but I decided really should get mobile. So, I'll check out Tulum ruins today if the weather holds up & then move on early tomorrow morning for Bacalar.

More coming...

On the Move

"Turtle Bay" ~ Akumal, Mexico (c) 2011 Skip Hunt

Well, my time ran out in the delightful condo in Playa del Carmen a friend had lent me for a whole week. I really enjoyed that place. Development has exploded there in the last decade and in most places that would be bad news.

Not so in Playa. All of the architecture is tastefully done and you get only the minimum of tourist hassles. The beach is amazing and it really does have a Riviera vibe to it.

Hanging out on the other side of the highway in the Eco-House community was just as spectacular! And private cenotes are definitely the bomb!

It was time to ramble on down the road toward a place recommended by three different Mexican friends. To be honest, I am still trying to figure out what the attraction is here. I don't want to whine about anything because for the most part the trip so far has been golden.

Today took a bit of a detour. I began feeling a bit feverish yesterday and through the night. I didn't have any choice but to push on through it with hope it was just a cold. I drank a ton of water trying to flush my system only to discover the 4-hr bus to Bacalar doesn't have a bathroom! Had to go twice on the side of the highway with the whole bus watching and two more times at regular station stops.

Made it to Bacalar and found a room, but the owner's bazillions of children are each taking turns screaming bloody murder. My fever boiling head can't take much more. It's been raining almost non-stop but I did get out long enough to get a few shots and look for a pharmacy. The owner says I should go to the hospital instead because medicine is cheaper there.

I ate a bunch of raw garlic hoping the natural antibiotic would help, but if I digress mañana I will likely find that hospital. ;)

Ok, end of the whining. Hopefully my fever will break and I'll get some sunshine tomorrow so I can hike around and see if I can figure out why my Mexican friends like this place so much. There is supposed to be a Menonite community near by and I saw a man wearing one of their customary hats and a woman knitting with her hair pulled back so tight it looked like it would tear out by the roots!

All for now, and wish me suerte that the garlic works and the children tire soon.

Hasta,
