Sorry to hear about your disappointing visit to Tampico. A buddy and I took a bus from Salina, KS, to Tampico in 1989, and spent a week there. Had a very nice time. We intended to go to Veracruz, but by the time we reached Tampico, we couldn't bear another minute of bus travel. We stayed near the park in central Tampico, ate in the market and went everyday by local bus to the beach.

@Brooks.... well, if I'd just gone downtown to find a room first and had not taken the word of the taxi drivers (yes, I know better) ;-) then I think I would have enjoyed Tampico much more. I'll definitely be back through there eventually and will likely plan a little longer stay in a room more central.
You would have thought I'd have learned by now that you can't judge a city by the areas near the bus terminal. ;-)
